Intelligent Transportation Systems Information and Infrastructure Laboratory (I3 Lab)

About the I3 Lab

As part of the Mid-America Transportation Center, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Information and Infrastructure Laboratory is a state-of-the-art ITS educational and research facility at the University of Nebraska's Peter Kiewit Institute of Information Science, Technology and Engineering. The I3 Lab is dedicated to providing a research intensive educational environment for undergraduate and graduate students in transportation engineering, computer and electronics engineering, computer science, and other ITS disciplines. Bringing together faculty and students from Civil Engineering, Computer and Electronics Engineering, and Computer Science, researchers conduct multidisciplinary research to develop innovative models and applications for ITS.

The I3 Lab has several distinguishing characteristics including

  • real-time ITS data streams from a video detection system with coverage along a half-mile segment of arterial street in Omaha, NE including two signalized intersections
  • access to and control of two signalized intersections through a partnership with the City of Omaha
  • communications between the I3 Lab and the street equipment using single-mode fiber optic cable supplied and installed by Cox Communications
  • connection to Internet2
  • connections to the Telecommunications Engineering Lab (TEL) and the Computer Vision & Image Processing Lab, both located at the Peter Kiewit Institute
